The history of this county is disfigured by the woeful delusion of witchcraft which raged here in the latter part of the 17th century; and which, originating in that part of Salem which is now included in Danvers, extended to neighboring towns, until not less than 20 persons had actually been executed, while 8 more had been condemned, 150 were in prison awaiting trial, and 200 others had been accused.

It is acknowledged that most of those who suffered and many others of the accused were persons of excellent character.

These, of course, were at that time all incorporated towns in the Massachusetts Colony.

In the shire of Essex, Salem was incorporated 24 June 1629, as a town, and 23 March 1836, as a city; Lynn, in November 1637, as a town, and 10 April 1850, as a city; Enon (afterwards Wenham), was incorporated ; Ipswich, 5 August 1634; Rowley, 4 September 1639; Newbury, ; Gloucester, , as a town, and , as a city; and Chochicawick (afterwards Andover), , after the incorporation of Essex County, 2 July 188bet opened at City Of Enon ( After Vancover ) Please feel free to look around the site and should you need anything you can contact the county coordinators, Michelle Wilkins Cook and Jodi Salerno by going to the contact us page.

The following is but a small sample of what they provide for Massachusetts genealogy at Ancestry.

Sangus Iron Works National Historic Site - located about 10 miles northeast of downtown Boston in Saugus, Massachusetts.

It it the site of the , founded by John Winthrop the Younger and in operation between 1646 and approx. It includes the reconstruction blast furnace, forge, rolling mill, shear, slitter and a quarter ton drop hammer.

Indian disturbances affected the inhabitants but little until the breaking out of King Philip's War; in which brave soldiers and good leaders from Essex County distinguished themselves at various points.

Theirs were the troops so mercilessly slaughtered at "Bloody Brook," in Deerfield, a body of ninety picked, well-disciplined, courageous soldiers known as "the Flower of Essex," under Captain Lothrop, where they were surprised by a large body of Philip's savage warriors.
